Laparoscopic surgery is a minimally invasive surgery (MIS) in which small incisions are made in the abdomen to insert surgical instruments. Most complications in this tpe of surgery arise during primary trocar insertion, since the surgeon has not yet gained visual access into the cavity.

AirLift is a low cost safety addition to laparoscopic surgery that reduces injury caused by primary trocar insertion. It uses pressure to hold on to the abdominal wall and prevents the collapse of the abdominal cavity during primary trocar insertion.

AirLift in action

This was one of my first indepent semester-long school projects. One of the most memorable things of this project was working with my teammates. I had a lot of fun working with them and subsequently went on to work with all of them again on different projects throughout my undergraduate. I also remember how we looked endlessly at so ways of approaching the problem attempting to find the best solution. Ultimately, I learned that you might never find the best solution, you just find a good solution and sometimes that solution is the most simple and clean one.
